What is a rumble seat?

A rumble seat is a small and often cramped seat located at the back of a roadster or convertible car, typically facing backward. It is intended for occasional use and is often just a cushioned bench without a seat belt or other safety features.

Rumble seats were popular in vintage cars in the early to mid-20th century, providing additional seating for passengers in addition to the main seats in the car. They were commonly used for children or for a fun and adventurous ride for adults.

However, rumble seats have largely fallen out of favor due to safety concerns, as they do not provide the same level of protection in the event of a collision as modern car seats do. Some states even have laws prohibiting passengers from riding in rumble seats.

Despite their diminished popularity, rumble seats can still be found in some classic cars today, adding a touch of nostalgia and vintage charm to the driving experience.
